The people in my lab and I study the language production system and the
consequences of its damage due to brain injury. A specific focus is on
how verbal communication depends on executive control abilities, and how
loss of such abilities can impact our ability to connect to the world.
Some of these abilities, such as detection of conflict and enforcement
of inhibitory control seem to be implicit. Speakers are not aware of
them. Others, such as selective attention, can be modulated by the
speaker. Using behavioral, computational, and neurostimulation methods,
we aim to understand the cognitive architecture of language production,
with the ultimate goal of bringing language back to those who have lost
it to stroke.
